Unpleasant.
If you'd wanted to diagnose the problem that specifically you'd have done so before spending the $$$.
NOW, the question will remain - how much will he charge for the actually required work versus the unwanted service previously provided?

This is why I'm learning to fix my own shit.

I'm sorry Ido. I'm quickly souring on amp techs myself. Rip that guy a new asshole and have him fix it.

Update again and still not good news...
He phones me and says he can't recreate it so he hasn't been able to fix it.
Now he wants me to bring my guitar in to his shop next Wednesday at 4pm and try and recreate it.
Apparently the "decorative stairs" company next door has people on the phone all day so he can't make any noise until the end of the work day. What kind of amp repair shop doesn't have a guitar to test amps with? !!!!! And exists where they cannot make any noise???? I wonder how many amps this guy "cannot fix", because he uses a sine wave generator into the input to test it.
Well if he can't "recreate it" I know he'll be happy to have me take it to someone else, which I will.
People want something for nothing, they want it right now. Either they can't tell quality or don't care but feel it is important that everyone agrees with them.

I posted in the repair section on the Marshall forum to see if anyone has any ideas. I'm not expecting anything, just looking for any suggestions on caps/switches IC's that can be tested somehow.

Sent the latest shop an email today asking when I can expect my amp back. It's been there 5 weeks now.

They apparently fixed the problem with random channel switching but called me when I was on the way to pick it up last Friday and said there was some kind of issue with a lack of gain on the amp.

During our previous phone conversations, it sounded like a rookie or apprentice was doing the work, and my guy had found an issue with the repair that took forever to troubleshoot (backwards transistor install).

How much is an amp repair that takes 5 weeks (or more) based on hourly rate of whatever??? That would make the whole thing even less enjoyable.... :dislike:

Been using my Fender Frontman - gets me by but I want my amp back.
Yeah - my recent experience with 2 different shops has been lousy.
Intermittent issues don't help but 5 weeks!!

Who is doing the Work Ido? Long and McQuade has sent my Traynor rental to someone somewhere in Edmonton to get repaired. It's been a week and they haven't even so much as phoned the store back yet. Wondering if it is the same place?

Right now it's at
Big Leaf Music Ltd.
Musical instrument repair shop in Edmonton, Alberta
Address: 11919 Wayne Gretzky Drive Northwest, Edmonton, AB T5B 1Y4
They are a Marshall warranty repair shop so they should be good.

The shop that couldn't find it/fix it and charged me $183 for cleaning it (that should fix it buddy said) was
Edmonton Audio Works
17312 108 Avenue NW
Edmonton, AB T5S 1E8

Good, fast, cheap

Well, hard to say how long it will be. No email or phone call about my amp yet today. Maybe he's going to finish it before he calls me...

What's the problem with the rental amp? What kind of amp?

It is just a little 40W Traynor IronHorse.

not sure. We though it was tube issues so the store ordered new tubes and replaced it. It solved the microphonic tube issues so they thought all was well but this was not the case. They plugged it in and turned it up it was still doing that so they had to send it away as it was sort of mystery and surpassed their own level of support.

I'm not totally chuffed about it. It's a rental. right now it is a delicate balance of "will he or won't he buy it" They sort of flip flop on me. Another story for another day.
