Speaker ohm questions about life

Post by liv_rong »

I’m lost again. If you run two 16ohm speakers together does it still remain 16 or does it change it to 8?

Depends how you connect them... series - parallel. Be careful to research the speakers and their load handling.

What are you trying to do? Speakers are not equal... Loading, impedance, phase all matter depending on the speaker and the application.

What mutt said.

Two 16 ohm speakers in series = 32 ohms
Two 16 ohm speakers in parallel = 8 ohms

Two 16 ohm speakers will never be 16 ohms total.

Ok. Reason I’m asking is Orange 2x12 cabs come loaded with Vintage 30’s but speakers are sold as either 16 or 8 ohm. When I was running two 16 ohm cabs on my last amp I was told that that made it an 8 ohm setup. My amp now is only 8 or 4 ohm so it seems to hamper my cab shopping experience. I’d like the Orange 2x12. So those must be two 8 ohm speakers run in series then? So is there a way to rewrite them in parallel to make them 4 ohm and thus be able to run my amp on It successfully?

Yes. If they're two 8 ohm in series, you can rewire them to parallel for a 4 ohm load.

Greg has it .... if the 2x12 cab is 16ohms then it has to be two 8 ohm speakers in series ... so change them to parallel.

what amp is it?
