N.M.D. #1

What type and size you need, and where you should point it. Does a large diaphragm do a better job in preventing pregnancy than a small? WTF is phantom power and why do you need it? All these important questions and more, discussed within. Entendre at your own risk.

N.M.D. #1

Post by Greg_L »

I don't think I've ever done a new mic day thread. Mics just aren't that big a deal to me.

But I had a bunch of Amazon credit, so I needed to use it on something. I've been wanting an affordable ribbon mic, so I got this:

MXL R144

Seems pretty nice. Very sturdy, nice build quality, nice shock mount, fancy little case. I'll try to blow it up with some clips tomorrow.

Cool man, I've looked at at that very mic many times...Most are way outta my price range, so I'm pretty curious to hear what you do with it...

Hmmm, looks good but could be not. I look forward to hearing the ribbon flapping in the breeze created by a Marshall.

We will see today.

I'm hoping to use it sparingly as a "thickener" mic for certain things, or as a warmer mic for things like kazoos, handclaps, tambourines, etc.

That is one sexy mic. Mind if i ask what it might have cost you rough;y. been kind of wanting a ribbon mic as well.

I would suspect it would be a damn fine mic for vocals yes?

This was like $120. Mic, case, shock mount, some weird cleaning rag, extra springs for the shock mount, and a pop filter.

Maybe? I don't know. I doubt it since they're figure-8 mics. They pick up from the front and back. Maybe if you're going for a certain vocal sound in the right room a ribbon could be a good vocal mic. But for most vocal applications, probably not.

Ahh! makes sense. I didn't know it was a figure 8 mic! not the most ideal.

I'm pretty sure all ribbon mics are figure-8 mics. I've never heard of one that isn't. I'm not that well-versed on ribbon mics though. I just wanted one to have one if the need ever arises. And I didn't actually have to pay for it, so win.

I'm also curious how that mic sounds ....like Miner I have looked at that same mic as a possibility.

I'm gonna do some clips today.

I suspect it's probably fairly smooth and dark - like most ribbons tend to be. I'm thinking it'll be a good mic for dead center speaker applications where a dynamic or condenser would be way way too bright. That's what I'm gonna try first anyway.

Ugh, sorry I didn't get to the clips today. I did test it out a little and it works great, but I'll do some real clips in the next few days.

I've never used a ribbon mic, but for a while now I've wanted to try a pair as drum overheads. I'm interested to see how it performs. :)

I wonder if Santa will bring me a pair of Royer 121s? :not worthy:
