Re: ***Contest to be announced tonight Midnight MST***
Hey Gang, this isn't really much, but it something. I had an hour this weekend to screw with stuff tried something new and stumbled on some stuff but i thought it might be fun to turn it into something fun?
We're going to do a Recording Rebels version of a "how many candy beans are in the jar" game. There is a right answer. Some one might nail it. Someone may not? In the event someone doesn't hit it on the head, closest to nailing is the winner. There is a 1st place prize When it wraps up the winner can PM their address to me and i'll ship it off. If only one person plays along. that person wins free shit.
Now with out further ado... drum roll please.
!!GUESS THE SETTINGS!!
Straight forward enough right? I have two tones. Noticeably different. Both Same Amp (The Orange AD30) , Same Guitar (LPJr Bridge P90), Same Mic (SM57)
Your mission for each tone? Take your guess, at the following:
Master=
Treb=
Mid=
Bass=
Gain=
Speaker= Top L, Top R, Bot L, Bot R
Mic Placement=
YES. Mic Placement. Counting Jelly beans take skill boys. For Mic Placement you have four positions to pick from:
0=Cap
1=Cap Meets Cone
2=Mid Cone
3=Far edge of Speaker
and a distance off Grill from on the cloth up to 2inches in each position at any increment
!!EASY!!
Track A
Track B

awesome youtube comment of the day
Lol it's still less satanic than whatever rituals Katie Perry and Taylor Swift do in their performances.

Interesting that Slade & Big Country came up with THAT bagpipe guitar sound at similar times - fortunately Slade didn't continue with it as a signature sound.
Shannon, my ears can't do that sort of thing - I'll leave it to the guitarists and drummer guitarists.

K - will have a go once I'm done work tonight.
People want something for nothing, they want it right now. Either they can't tell quality or don't care but feel it is important that everyone agrees with them.

I hear what you're saying but I think he nailed it right off the bat.WhiskeyJack wrote: βTue May 02, 2017 5:10 pm YA'll gotta try harder. No copying off poor old Steve's answers on this assignment.
Everything sounds centered to me and it sounds like the master is kinda lowish.
Re: Guess The Tone Settings!! 1st TRR Sponsored Contest
What he said...except on Track B I think the mic is 1.75" off the grill...not 1.5". I can definitely hear that 1/4" difference.vomitHatSteve wrote: βTue May 02, 2017 11:19 am Ha ha! Nice!

Re: Guess The Tone Settings!! 1st TRR Sponsored Contest
If i were to guess you are thinking this is ridiculous and as purposeless as seperting left sock and right socks for the laundry but i assure you it isn't. there is a summary in the end. it's cool. Just hang in there till Friday.
Re: Guess The Tone Settings!! 1st TRR Sponsored Contest
Where do you want me to send the can of beans?
Re: Guess The Tone Settings!! 1st TRR Sponsored Contest
20 foot - clearly. Only a pussy would use anything else...
I'll go with Miro, minus 0.5 on everything, just because...
I am so not interested in tone for tone's sake, but I guess you all knew that already. While it's important, it's not so important in what I do because I usually have so many guitars going on that you can't identify whether the individual toans on any one in particular are good or not... just the way I am.
Delusions of Tom Verlaine, with way more tracks...
But, continue!

Right?! Especially since I clearly have no idea what I'm doing!WhiskeyJack wrote: βTue May 02, 2017 5:10 pm YA'll gotta try harder. No copying off poor old Steve's answers on this assignment.
Re: Guess The Tone Settings!! 1st TRR Sponsored Contest
I'm kinda the same way about tone for tone's sake. Not knocking the guys who enjoy experimenting purely with amp tones and posting...but I don't really put that much thought into tones until I"m in a tracking mode...and then it's all relative to the rest of the mix and track interplay.Armistice wrote: βWed May 03, 2017 8:15 am I am so not interested in tone for tone's sake, but I guess you all knew that already. I don't have like 2-3 preset "perfect" tones that I use often when I need to drop some guitar tracks...it's always what the song calls for, and I think I've only once or twice referred to notes from previous sessions in order to redial a given tone...most times I just fuck with the knobs until I think it sounds pretty decent.
I also go through phases a lot with guitar stuff, like I may stick with one amp for awhile...then go to a different one...etc...or use the same guitar for a few tracks, or grab something I've not used in awhile (amp and guitar) just because I haven't...just to do something different.
