Votes are in, beans counted and are going to get double checked.

SCORING: how it works.

Possible 50 points per track: 10 points for each right guess for master, treb, mid, bass and gain.
If you guessed off i took the difference of the right answer and your guess and took it off your 10 points. If you were wrong by going over the right answer i took off an additional 1 point.

Example:

right answer was 6 you guessed 6 you scored 10
right answer was 8 you guessed 5 you scored 7
right answer was 2 you guessed 10 you scored 1

Speaker, Mic Placement and Distance are bonus points. +2 for each right guess. If i am honest these were sort of really finely tuned wildcards. But so worth it IMHO.

More to follow this afternoonish.

Scores:

86-Greg
81-Ocnor
77.5-JD (I gave him the bonus for the .5 inch on Track B for his 1cm not quite exact but close enough)
69-Miro
69- Team VHS-MUtt-LtBoob.
63 Hatfield Creek

I'll get the prize in the mail this weekend and the winner can post his victory pics when they arrive.

The Settings were as follow

Track A:
Master-10
treb-7
mid-10
bass-9
gain-5

Top Left Speaker, Position 2, On the cloth.

Track B:
Master-4
treb-7
mid-10
bass-9
gain-6

Top Left Speaker, Position 1, 0.5" Off the Cloth

There ya go.

In closing I'm not sure why i felt this was cool to do with a contest I think it was more of a light bulb moment for me and i wanted to share and just give you guys an exercise with your ears. I'm actually quite impressed cause if the roles were reversed id have like shit the bed if i was asked to do it.

Track A was honestly my "go to" tone with this amp for most stuff i am working on beleive it or not :lollers: . When i started putting stuff together, i was just really really bummed out on the whole sound of it when put into a song. I don't think i was 'listening' to my tones i was more just hearing them and recording them. I thought where i had the cab in another room i could crank it louder and things would be better. It's hard to truly "hear" a tone in that format, at least with out someone in there moving a mic around for you. When i moved the cab into my room where i track it forced me to just turn it down and try new things. Friggin dog running in the room and bumping the mic all the time kind forced me to also constantly revisit mic placements HAHA!!!

Enter Track B. Which i really really like a lot more. It's still not quite where i want it to be but it is getting closer and sits in a few songs much nicer. I'd like it a little brighter but, that is beside the point. I can always improve on it.

Moral of my Story is that i just wanted to present my Psuedo-Light Bulb Moment with you guys in a fun way, and finding "your tone" really is a never ending journey. We're never really done are we?

In the End, Congrats Greg, I honestly though Ocnor had it until i mathed out the numbers. This was fun. if anyone thinks of another contests plop them in the suggestion box or PM me. we can work out something.

Fuck yeah!

I'd like to thank my mom and dad for creating me with ears, and my wife because if I didn't she'd be mad.

For me, the first tone was easy. I say that because it was so thick and meaty I thought "this has to be cranked and the mic has to be on grill with all that proximity effect". The rest was basically just guesses. The second tone is much more preferable but harder to decipher. So I humbly accept this victory and you are all worthy competitors. No doubt that next time I will not be so lucky.

I'll just leave you with the insightful words of Ricky Bobby - If you aint first, you're last. :minernuggs: :sherlock: :coolstorybro:

Isn't that score kind of a victory in and of itself?

Next contest needs to have high-enough point possibilities that someone can score 420.

off topic but I read an interesting article last year (I'll try to find it ) where an amp guy that worked at Budda showed the freq repsonse of all kinds of amps and every single one of them was scooped even with the mids maxed out!

It was really surprising .... even the most middy amps you can think of had a pronounced scoop.

It's my very rudimentary understanding that the tone stack really puts a load on the preamp tubes and the result is midrange loss. And when you put that tone stack at the end of all of the gain stages, that's a lot of signal loss. The signal is sort of fixed by a cathode follower in the tone stack, but since most tone controls use audio taper pots and they're passive - filter only - they can't boost - then the midrange loss is just what it is. But it all works out because we humans have no problem hearing midrange.
