Latest Thing with James' Draft Solo n Intro

Post by rayc »

Hello folks - thought I'd start a new thread as I can't add anymore attachments to the 1st post in the other one.
Here's a mix of the Maudlin thing with James' draft intro & solo. He'll complete them and add some bits & bobs when there's a vocal to play off.
Anyone interested in yodelling?

Here's an update.
Vocals are on their way so I decided to tidy things up with a little slip n slide to tighten the timing of a guitar or two. Any thoughts?

Sounds pretty good Ray. When's that Super Lead getting back to you?

Keeps improving. No strangled out of key notes jumped out at me on this one.

Thanks Steve,
I've either re-tracked or edited around as many as I could manage. Thanks.

These "bed" tracks are pretty good, nothing pops up while listening that I would adjust. The drop in volume works well for the verses, and the punch on the choruses and solo is equally dynamically well set. The arpeggio + strumming is a cool combination. Solo is working well..

I spent a few minutes on repeat, opened the lyric post and read along to the music. I haven't put a lot of thought into this and have only had one cup of coffee, so take this with a grain. The pattern of the chords and the lyrics don't mesh for me. Why? The meter of the words differs from the chords in my humble opinion. I found I had to delay the beginning and middle of lines while "humming the words" in my head so it followed the rhythm. It tends to separate the lines and make the story "stutter". The words (for me) are being spread apart. To retain the chord patterns you could add more words to the lines. But as a songwriter I would work this from the opposite direction, work from the words, and rewrite the chords.

Ok so you all know my writing style/strategy so you probably know where this is coming from... What's in your head (or JD's) for a melody will likely work perfectly, I just wanted to throw this out there.

I'll shut up now and get another coffee :cuckoo:
People want something for nothing, they want it right now. Either they can't tell quality or don't care but feel it is important that everyone agrees with them.

Gerry,
Excellent insight, thanks.
I'll do an in head & out loud hum/speak today to get my head around the combination.
Thanks mate - back to the coffee.

Sounds good to me, Ray. When you get some vox, plonk them in the mix as best you can and I'll do some retracking and add extra bits. I'll do loads of licks so you can use them, drop them, shift them around as you want.

Hmmm, I definitely want to re-track that solo with warm hands! Its actually really easy, my hands just weren't obeying my commands!

The solo works a treat so improving on it will be a bonus.
I LOVE threading licks & lines through songs.
Gerry/Ido1957 has done some simply superb running licks for me...

and
[BBvideo=560,315]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-drQWIYygyw[/BBvideo]
are a pair of good examples.
In fact, for a couple of tracks he did a whole song of licks and solos, rather like J Masics is inclined to do, and I just weaved bits in amongst the rest where they best fitted.

Did i read correctly this is a team effort with JD?

Shan,
Thanks very much.
James did the intro & solo lead work and will add some noodles around the vocals.
musicturtle has done a draft vocal and is sorting out a final takes in the near future - as usual it's a collab for me.
Gerry's been very busy of late and Greg's trying to encourage me to get a good guitar sound so he didn't drop his ace axe tracks on this one.
Bandi Narbox did the tub thumping.
I hope to get this one sorted as the other two James has played on have stalled - I want to break the hoo doo.
Cheers
