"Tape saturation" type plugins

Vocals too high in the mix? Too low? Not even sure? Snare sounds wonky? And how do I make everything louder than everything else? Step in, step in, for your mix Viagra from people who know the secrets.

Ah... that's fair enough. Is it like amp sims "Click here and sound like Angus Young!" without actually knowing anything about how to record a good track.

I wouldn't avoid them on that ground though, as all those things will do for n00bs in the long run is hold them back - that's what I found using sims for ages. What I'm after is a good (but simple to use) vocal EQ - although I might just learn to use the ones I have better and a vocal distortion.
Well I'm not trying to stop anyone from using them if they want to. They are good. He's a smart dude, or at least smart enough to hire smart people to make his plug-ins. I'm just not ever going to buy them myself. I'm not contributing to his profiting from the dumbing down of audio engineering.

I use mainly the Sonitus FX suite in Sonar. The verb is pretty stout and I know it well...same for compression. I also dig the tape module in an old version of Izotope (3) that I keep around just for that reason. I use what I have to in order to yield a sound that I want but it's mostly an ear thing. I also like to use an old multiband stereo enhancer. When used very sparingly on the middle frequencies, it can help open up the middle of a cluttered mix. They get a bad rap tho because most peeps use them like morons.

I've got a few tape saturation plugs...but TBH, I just never tried them on anything, since I track almost everything to a tape deck, and I hit it pretty hard...I don't have a need to use the plugs.
