I guess it depends on what function you want them to serve. If it's just to knock down some room reflections for vocals or acoustic guitars, you could keep them thinner and easier to move around. If you're wanting them for loud electric guitar or mixing, then I'd say the thicker the better. They'd just start to get hard to move around due to weight as they get thicker. Mine are 3" thick and they do a good job for vocals, spoken word, acoustic guitar, etc. They're hinged in the middle so I can fold them in half and stick them in a corner as a 6" thick pseudo bass trap kind of thing.
